Well, it all starts with Elon Musk The letter X fascinated him since 1999 when he purchased the x.com domain for an online payment business.

One year later, it merged with another company called Confinity to create a large online payment platform.

Elon Musk wanted the new company to be called x.com but after focus group research thought it sounded like an adult video website, rather than a reputable payment company.

So the executive board rejected the name opting instead for PayPal. The problem was, When Elon Musk existed PayPal in 2000 by selling all his shares, he also lost the x.com domain.

But his affinity for the letter never faded. Using it in a new space exploration company called SpaceX in 2002. PayPal retained ownership of the x.com domain until 2017. When they allowed Elon Musk to buy it back but the exact purchase price wasn’t revealed, but it was estimated to be in the tens of millions.

When faced with criticism for discarding one of the most recognized brand identities in the word, “Tweet” in the dictionary, Musk responded by saying: The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140-character messages going back and forth – Like birds tweeting but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video. In months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird.

So that is why Twitter changed to X.
